Gambian team of builders
Building great things
The Kurumbo building team:
to be extended with more people so we can build faster
In 2016 Steffen joined the project after being in Gambia and seeing it all himself. From the first day he started fixing generators in the village and doing more of that stuff. We will discuss our designs with him. Steffen will be making special tools (which you can not buy in the store or anywhere on internet) for making earthbag houses. Somes small parts of the first houses will be premade in his garage and then sent to Gambia.
Martijn van Putten
Martijn joined the project in 2015. His job is electrical engineer and his knowledge is something we can use very good. He will be taking care of challenges in solar energy and waterpumping. Also the drawing of 3D images and maps is in his hands. In februari 2016 he went to Kartong with Steffen en Kevin to see the possibilities and limits. The sun will be his friend and enemy.
Jerreh met Kevin in 2008 and since then they are very good friends. All his life he lived in Kartong, a small village in the South of The Gambia. He owns a big plot of land, but never really had the money to invest and develop somehting. To develop some kind of lodge was his dream. Not a normal one but a very special one. A few years ago he developed a lodge with the Dutch Ria. Now, money problems are making it difficult to continue developing. The road towards it, is so bad that a lot of times it isn’t even possible to reach the place. Thats why we need more help like funds. Jerreh is now managing Kurumbo lodge and running building activities.
Kevin de Zwart
Kevin is founder of the Open Source House Project. He met Jerreh Manneh in 2008 when he was in Gambia for the first time. Jerreh took Kevin to his land and the dreams about this project already started. For years the project was just a dream. But in 2015 Kevin decided to pick up these dreams and ideas. He used 2015 to develop his ideas further with Martijn van Putten. They were even with the last 5 competitors in the competition for the ASN World Prize (by ASN Bank) but our project was not selected to win the competition. Now, they’ll try different ways to find funds and investors to make their dreams possible.
